Zach Johnson attacks par 5s
Zach Johnson played it safe on Augusta National’s par-5s when he won the 2007 Masters Tournament. He didn’t hold to the same strategy in Thursday’s opening round.\
Johnson went for the green in two on the par-5 13th with a 5-wood from 235 feet to the hole. He left himself a 25-foot putt and converted for his first-ever eagle at Augusta.
“I had a great number, and I had a great lie,” he said.
“I obviously made a good putt.”
The club awards various crystal prizes for achievements on the course throughout the week. Johnson earned a pair of crystal highball glasses for his eagle.
Lee Westwood’s low round of the day (5-under 67) was good enough for a crystal vase.
Padraig Harrington, who won a crystal pedestal bowl for his co-championship in Wednesday’s Par-3 Tournament, took home some matching glasses with an eagle on No. 2 Thursday thanks to a 5 iron from 225 yards to nine feet.
“That was something in the bank early,” Harrington said. “I always felt after that that I’d never be over (par) the rest of the day.”
