1989: Nick Faldo wins first Masters in playoff
Nick Faldo won his first Masters by chasing down Scott Hoch, defeating him in a sudden-death playoff. Faldo switched putters after a third-round 77, and the change worked wonders. He made eight birdies against one bogey to close with the 65, the low round of the tournament.
It appeared that Faldo's superior round would go to waste on the first hole of the playoff. Hoch's approach on No. 10 left him about 25 feet for birdie, while Faldo found the bunker, blasted out and had 12 feet left for par.
But Hoch missed his birdie putt and then shocked the gallery by missing a two-foot putt for par. Faldo's par putt also missed, sending the pair to the 11th hole.
Faldo took advantage of the opportunity, burying a 25-foot putt for birdie to end the playoff and become the fifth foreign champion in tournament history.
``It was ecstasy to make that putt,'' Faldo said. ``It was a dream. You dream it was going to happen. When it does right before your eyes, you can't believe it.''
