“Letters from Arnie” – Adam Scott
Editor’s note: Throughout Arnold Palmer’s career, The King was well known for sending letters of praise to other golfers. Many of his notes were mailed to Masters Tournament champions. This week, The Augusta Chronicle will feature seven letters that Palmer wrote to other major championship winners, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel.
Eleven years after making his first appearance at Augusta National Golf Club, Adam Scott captured glory at the 2013 Masters Tournament.
One day after his victory, Arnold Palmer wrote to congratulate the new champion.
“It took a while but I felt for a long time that you would be winning majors as the months and years came along,” Palmer wrote to Scott on April 15, 2013. “You certainly got the first one in fine fashion.”
Scott closed the 2013 Masters with birdies on three of his last six holes, including a 25-footer on the 72nd hole. The putt earned Scott a playoff berth with Angel Cabrera, whom he outlasted with a 15-foot birdie on the second sudden-death hole.
“What a hard-earned and well-deserved victory yesterday at Augusta National!” Palmer wrote. “Congratulations!”
At the end of the letter, Palmer asked Scott to consider playing in his tournament at Bay Hill when planning his 2014 schedule.
“We would love to have you back at Bay Hill,” Palmer wrote.
