After opening the Masters with 76, Patrick Reed had one goal entering Friday’s second round.

“I have to make putts,” Reed said Thursday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the former Augusta State star, it didn’t happen.

Reed missed the cut after shooting 77. In four Masters appearances, Reed has twice missed the cut (2014 and 2017) with his best finish being a tie for 22nd in 2015.

After needing 34 putts in his opening round, Reed had six fewer Friday but struggled to find the fairway. In all, he hit just six of 14 fairways and seven of 18 greens in regulation.

Reed declined interview requests after Friday’s round.

“I’m sick and tired of hitting the ball well and putting (poorly) or hitting the ball (poorly) and putting great,” Reed said Thursday. “I’m just about sick and tired of the year already.”

In each of his two rounds, Reed’s struggles began on the opening hole. He double-bogeyed the first hole Thursday and carded a bogey Friday.

Reed followed up his miscue on No. 1 with bogeys on Nos. 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 15 and 17. He birdied Nos. 6, 13 and 18.

One of the few bright spots for Reed occurred on No. 18 when he holed a five-foot putt for birdie. It marked the first time Reed has birdied No. 18 in 12 competitive rounds at Augusta National.
