Thirty years ago, Larry Mize missed right of the 11th green before holing a 140-foot chip shot to win the 1987 Masters.

The Augusta native had a similar shot Sunday afternoon.

“I hit it right of No. 11 today,” Mize said. “I thought to myself, ‘It would be pretty fun to chip in from over here.’”

The outcome was different this Sunday (Mize made par), but the significance of making the cut on the 30th anniversary of his victory didn’t go unnoticed.

“To come back 30 years later and make the cut was great,” Mize said. “I can’t help but to be disappointed in the way I played this weekend, but it was great to be here. To still be playing and making the cut at 58 (years old) is better than I imagined.”

Mize shot 79 on Saturday and carded 76 in his final round to finish 17-over for the tournament. On Sunday, Mize shot 38 on each nine, with his lone birdie coming at No. 2

“I played better today,” Mize said. “I hit more greens, but my putting was just off. The greens were a little quicker and my speed was a little off.”

Mize hit 10 of 18 greens in regulation Sunday, compared with just 4 of 18 a day before. He said Sunday’s round “wasn’t far off” from being decent.

“I threw away a couple of shots on 13 with a very bad swing there,” Mize said of his bogey. “But overall, it wasn’t far off from being a decent round. It was definitely better today.”
