Collectors snap up pins commemorating each hole

Nancy Wheeler detached removed a 2018 Masters Tournament pin from its packaging and clipped it onto her Augusta National bucket hat.

After 18 years of purchases, her collection was complete.

“This is No. 18,” said Wheeler, who receives tournament badges but also won the Masters lottery this year and received two Monday practice round passes. “I started my collection in 2001 and this is it. This is the last one. I’m very curious to see what the pin will honor next year.”

In 2001, the tournament began a Masters pin series that commemorated each hole. The first year showed No. 1, and the list has progressed hole-by-hole each year since.

This marks the end of the 18-year series. The pins are sold in merchandise shops on the course.

“I had no idea about the series, but it’s pretty cool to know I have No. 18,” said Phil Donaldson, who attended the Masters for the first time Monday. “What a great idea (by Augusta National). I’d imagine the one from 2001 is pretty tough to find these days.”

The 2018 pin has a green border with the Masters Tournament logo in the center of the pin. Below the logo it reads: Hole #18 Holly. Par 4, 465 yards.

“Sweet and simple,” said Donaldson, laughing. “I’ll wear this pin with pride.”

A Masters merchandise official said the club has not decided what will be on the pin for 2019.
