Charley Hoffman fell victim to Friday’s wheel spinning performed by many in the Masters Tournament field.

Hoffman, who has a history of early contention at Augusta National Golf Club, found himself in a familiar position near the top of the leaderboard after a 3-under-par 69 in the first round Thursday.

After three birdies on the first nine Friday for 34, he seemed to be on his way to more of the same. But he followed with a double bogey on 12 and bogey on 17 to finish with 73 in the second round. He sits in a tie for eighth at 2-under, seven strokes behind leader Patrick Reed.

The 41-year-old Hoffman rebounded from a bogey on No. 1 by hitting his approach on No. 2 to 12 feet and making the birdie putt. He added a birdie on 5 when he hit a 198-yard approach to eight feet and sank the uphill putt.

The solid iron play continued on 8 when he knocked his third shot to 10 feet and made the birdie putt to get to 5-under, but it proved to be his final highlight of the day.

After recovery pars on holes 9 and 10 to stay at 5-under, Hoffman’s ball caught the wind on 12 and found Rae’s Creek to set the slide in motion. He carded double bogey on the par 3 and then failed to take advantage of either second-nine par 5 by making pars on both.

The difficult 17th green turned Hoffman’s visit into a bogey when he failed to get up and down from just off the front right edge.

As Reed and Marc Leishman raced up the leaderboard with rounds in the 60s, as well as Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, Hoffman slid into a tie with five others, including Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose and Bubba Watson.
