For the first time since 2015, Larry Mize won’t play the weekend at Augusta National Golf Club.

The 1987 Masters champion carded an opening-round 76 and followed it up with 80 on Friday.

“It wasn’t very good,” Mize said. “I struggled starting out and never could get the ball going where I wanted to. I didn't hit it very good. I didn't putt very good. I played pretty badly today.”

After Thursday’s round, Mize said he hoped to get back to even par. The Augusta native, however, began slowly with bogeys on Nos. 1, 4, 5, 7 and 9 to eliminate any chance of making the cut.

“It's disappointing,” Mize said. “But the way I played, I probably need the weekend off to give me a break and work on my game.”

For Mize, the most glaring issue this week was his iron play. Despite hitting 12 of 14 fairways Thursday, he struck a mere 6 of 18 greens in regulation. The pattern worsened Friday, as Mize went 10 for 14 in fairways hit, and 5 of 18 greens in regulation.

Mize’s lone birdie Friday was a chip-in on No. 3.

“That was the only bright spot,” he said. “And I turned around and bogeyed the next two holes, which was difficult. I thought I hit a perfect shot on 7, came up short and made bogey there. But that was just kind of my day. The few times I did hit a good shot they didn't turn out like I hoped.”

Mize, who turns 60 in September, hopes to return to Augusta National in better form.

“I haven't had my game very good the past few years,” he said. “I've just scraped it around and made the cut, but I haven't hit it very good. So I'd like to have my game better coming in here (in 2019)."
