As Patrick Reed was torching Augusta National, Josh Gregory left the tournament Friday afternoon and headed to the airport.

“I have a flight to catch,” said Gregory, Reed’s current coach and former collegiate coach at Augusta State University. “I have to fly back to Dallas.”

Gregory said his family is moving houses and he had planned to leave Augusta on Friday afternoon. What he didn’t know was that his pupil would card a second-round 66 to catapult to a two-shot lead.

“I was there most of the day,” Gregory said. “But I’m very superstitious and I’ve had this plan for awhile. I can’t change plans now.”

According to Gregory, Reed’s performance “doesn’t surprise me one bit. I’ve always believed his creativity fits Augusta National perfectly.”

Reed and Gregory teamed up to lead Augusta State to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2010 and 2011.

“Nobody in Patrick’s team is surprised to see this,” Gregory said. “I promise you that. I’ll be glued to the TV all weekend, but Patrick knows what he’s doing. He’s made tons of birdies these past four weeks, and that’s what you have to have at Augusta National.”

Although weather conditions are expected to worsen Saturday, Gregory believes Reed will be unfazed by the elements.

“He excels when it’s tough,” Gregory said. “That’s when he’s at his best. Patrick’s like a basketball player that wants the ball at the end of the game — he wants that shot. He wants the moment.”
