Consecutive eagles give Webb Simpson part of Masters history

Webb Simpson joked that the eagles would come in droves after near misses the past few years.

No one could’ve predicted they’d come in the fashion Simpson accomplished Sunday in the final round of the Masters Tournament.

Simpson holed out from 166 yards on the par-4 seventh for eagle, using a 7-iron, then followed up with a hole-out from 20 yards off the green on the par-5 eighth for eagle.

It marked just the fourth time a Masters participant has recorded consecutive eagles. Every other time occurred on the 13th and 14th holes, giving Simpson a little Masters history in the process.

“I’ve had a couple close calls with hole-outs and none of them have gone in for a couple years,” Simpson said. 

The 4-under stretch through two holes highlighted a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to finish 2-under for the tournament. He added birdies on Nos. 2, 10, 13 and 15 for his best round and overall finish at the Masters in seven appearances.

The strong finish was made even more special after Simpson’s father died in November. His father was his caddie in one of the Par-3 Contests a couple years ago, and the two came to the Masters when Simpson was 12.

“I thought a lot about him this week, especially on the Par-3 Contest with my kids out there,” he said. “I miss him like crazy. I was excited to get here. I knew I’d think about him a lot.

“I feel like each hole I hear him saying something to me, what to do, how to play, how to putt.”

Simpson will take more memories home from Augusta. He already had two sets of crystal from eagles at the Masters, and he’ll add a couple more. He said the balls from his two eagles will go into the crystal in a trophy case at home, not washed.

“All in all, a better week than I’ve had here. I have to build on it,” Simpson said.
