Ticket from first Masters sells for more than $118,000
A ticket from the inaugural Augusta National Invitation Tournament has been sold at auction for a record $118,598.63.
The paper ticket from the final round of the 1934 tournament (face value $2.20) was put up for sale by TheGolfAuction.com and is considered the finest example in the collecting world, according to a news release. It set a record for the highest known paid price for a sports ticket, according to the auction company.
“A record-setting number like this can only be achieved when you have multiple passionate collectors wanting a seldom seen piece of golf memorabilia,” The Golf Auction’s Kip Ingle said in a statement.
The tournament officially changed its name to the Masters Tournament in 1939, and items associated with the tournament and Augusta National Golf Club are highly sought by collectors. Plastic badges were introduced in 1961, and paper tickets from the early years are rare.
The ticket, number 1929, is believed to be one of fewer than 10 still in existence. The ticket, which was originally held by an Atlanta family that knew and lived near Masters co-founder Bobby Jones, sold in a previous auction in April 2012 for $31,987.25.
