Players have one week left to crack top 50 and earn Masters invite

The World Golf Championship-Match Play event begins Wednesday, and with it comes some important implications for players trying to crack the top 50 in the world rankings.

Players in the top 50 published next Monday will get in the 2019 Masters. The only other way is to win the Match Play Championship or the Texas Open.

With the Official World Golf Ranking that came out Monday, there are a handful of players who are on the cusp of getting in. Some need to maintain their spot in the top 50, and others will need to play well or get some help.

The players (ranking in parenthesis) on the bubble are Shane Lowry (48), Justin Harding (49), Byeong Hun An (51), Andrew Putnam (53), Jim Furyk (54), Chez Reavie (57), Sungjae Im (59) and Abraham Ancer (61).

Lowry, An, Reavie and Furyk are the only ones with previous Masters experience.

The field size is currently at 84 players.

Furyk, who has played in 20 Masters with a best showing of fourth in 1998 and 2003, vaulted up the rankings after finishing as runner-up at The Players and moved up three spots this week after the Valspar Championship.

Since the beginning of the year, three players have entered the field thanks to wins on the PGA Tour: Adam Long (Desert Classic), J.B. Holmes (Genesis Open) and Keith Mitchell (Honda Classic).

Jason Kokrak tried to join that list, but finished runner-rup to Paul Casey at the Valspar. Kokrak moved up 22 spots in the world ranking to 68 and is not in the Match Play field. He will need to win in Texas to get in the Masters.
