Fred Couples still going strong in 34th Masters appearance
Fred Couples is making his 34th Masters appearance this week but the 1992 champion isn't sure how long he’ll remain a competitor.
“I’m planning on playing a few more years but if it keeps playing as long as this I’m going to have to hit long irons and woods just to be able to score,” said Couples, 59. “I made the cut last year and I was a cripple, so I feel a lot better this year.”
Couples teed off at 8 a.m. Monday and played nine holes with Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas. The three played Augusta National’s second nine.
“To be out here playing with Tiger and Justin Thomas means a lot,” Couples said. “Look, this is my favorite spot in the world. I love the British Open and Riviera but this is my all-time favorite.”
Couples also made a point to rave about Augusta National’s altered fifth hole.
“It’s the most beautiful hole on the course,” Couples said. “It’s very long — they’re all long — but it’s spectacular.”
Couples tied for 38th last year and has made the cut all but once since 2010.
