Dustin Johnson said his career-best putting performance came in the BMW Championship in 2016. Coincidentally, he won.

“And I didn’t hit it that good,” Johnson said. “I just made everything I looked at.”

Johnson said if he plans to get his first Masters Tournament title, it’s going to come down to putting. He’s confident in every other aspect of his game.

“I’ve been putting well this year, so I mean, I have confidence with the putter,” Johnson said. “Just kind of probably not as much as I do in the rest of the game, you know, day‑in and day‑out, just because some days, you know, the hole looks like the size of a five‑gallon bucket, and some days it looks like the golf ball is bigger than the hole. You know, it just all depends.”

Johnson said he doesn’t plan to put too much pressure on himself this week to get the coveted green jacket. He doesn’t want to say he has to win.

But Johnson knows another major is something he needs. That, he said, doesn’t necessarily need to be the Masters.

However, Johnson is pleased with how he’s playing the greens through two practice rounds.

“I like these greens, they have got a lot of slope in them,” Johnson said. “It’s greens that ‑‑ I like to see the ball breaking; it’s something I really like out here. I’m comfortable on the greens, and I think if I can roll it well, I’ll be right there come Sunday.”

He tees off at 1:38 p.m. Thursday, with Bryson DeChambeau and Jason Day in his pairing.

A win Sunday would give Johnson a second major, to go with his 2016 U.S. Open. He admits that he’s let a couple slip away

“I’ve had some very good opportunities that I didn’t capitalize on,” Johnson said. “Disappointed or frustrated, you know, one of those would be OK to describe that. But I mean, it’s golf. This game’s very frustrating and disappointing at times, but I think I’m happy with my career so far. I definitely think it could have been better. But, you know, I’ve still got ‑‑ hopefully still got a lot of time left in my career.”
