Even after a 75 in the opening round of the Masters Tournament, No. 1-ranked Justin Rose is still optimistic heading into the second round.

"If I can get it back into the red for the tournament tomorrow, then you can build a weekend," he said. "I feel I can still get to 11- or 12-under and which, you never know, I think this golf course offers a Sunday charge and there's a 64 out there, if you can hit the right shots at the right time."

After making par on the first four holes, Rose added four bogeys on the last five holes on the front nine. He managed to squeeze in a birdie on No. 15 to get to 3-over par Thursday. He had two birdies all afternoon.

Rose struggled to find the fairways, hitting just five of 14. On the greens, he had two 3-putts and needed 31 putts.

Rose has not missed the cut at the Masters in 13 previous appearances.

"I've just got to give myself the opportunity. If I do play a dream round, I'm close enough," he said.

SPIETH STRUGGLES: Jordan Spieth has not finished worse than 11th in his five Masters starts, but he'll need a good second round to make the cut.

The 2015 Masters champion shot 3-over 75 on Thursday. That matches his high round at Augusta National, which came in the final round in 2017.

Spieth shot 40 on his opening nine, including a double bogey at the par-3 sixth. He played his final nine in 1-under fashion.

DAY'S BACK: Right around No. 2, Jason Day needed medical attention. After hurting his back picking up one of his children Thursday morning, he managed to power through the first two holes before needing treatment.

Day withdrew during the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month with a back injury.

Despite walking gingerly and battling back pain, Day finished the first round and managed to shoot 2-under 70. He is tied for 11th after the first round.

While playing hurt, Day made four birdies and nearly book-ended his day with bogeys. He had 29 putts, hitting 12 greens in regulation. He also hit 10 fairways.

Day, who is grouped with co-leader Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson, will tee off at 10:42 a.m. today.

LONG TIME COMING: After waiting 50 weeks to tee it up in his first Masters, Andrew Landry didn't want his first round to end with a bogey.

Landry, who won the 2018 Texas Open on April 22, had recovered from a double bogey on No. 13 to reel off birdies from Nos. 14-16 to get back to even-par for the round. After missing an 11-foot birdie putt on No. 17, he hit his second shot left of the green on No. 18. He had a delicate chip to the pin, cut back left. He knocked it to four feet and made the putt for even-par 72.

"I knew that chip because I had been practicing it," Landry said.
