Augusta's Larry Mize misses Masters cut
For the second consecutive year, Larry Mize won’t play the weekend at Augusta National.
The 1987 Masters champion carded an opening-round 77 and followed it up with 74 on Friday.
“The competitor in me is disappointed,” said Mize, who made the cut in 2016 and 2017. “My goal was to be playing this weekend.”
After Thursday’s round, Mize said he hoped to break par Friday and fight his way inside the cut line. The Augusta native, however, made only one second-round birdie (No. 13) to eliminate that opportunity.

“I just couldn’t make anything,” Mize said. “I gave myself some chances — I had looks on Nos. 3, 7 and 9. Unfortunately, I didn't capitalize on them.”
For Mize, the most glaring issue Thursday was his iron play. Despite hitting 12 of 14 fairways in his opening round, he struck a mere 9 of 18 greens in regulation. The pattern improved Friday, as Mize went 12 for 18 in greens hit, but had trouble capitalizing on his birdie chances.
Mize had 32 putts in his second round.
“There were some positive signs out there,” Mize said. “But only one birdie isn't going to get it done out here. I needed to shoot under par today, not 74.”
Mize, who turned 60 in September, said he hopes to return to Augusta National “in better form” next year.
When asked how many more times he plans to play competitively, Mize answered, “I still feel like I can play the golf course and make the cut. And there’s a number of people who still want me to come back and play, which is nice. I appreciate that. I’ll be back next year.”
