Masters Tournament still on but Augusta National monitoring coronavirus status
Concern about the novel coronavirus has reached even the hallowed grounds of Augusta National Golf Club.
In an announcement today, Chairman Fred S. Ridley said the club is “mindful” of the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 and is in ongoing consultation with experts, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the Georgia Department of Public Health and local health authorities.
“As a result of this collaboration, and based upon our knowledge of the situation at this time, we are proceeding as scheduled for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals and the Masters Tournament,” Ridley said. “We will continue to review the available facts and information with the experts and authorities, establish precautions and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of all involved.”
The Women’s Amateur is scheduled for April 1-4, the Drive, Chip and Putt finals are April 5, practice rounds for the tournament run April 6-8, and tournament play is April 9-12.
In the meantime, the club is urging everyone to follow advice from the CDC to help prevent the spread of the virus.
“In addition, we strongly encourage all those traveling to Augusta, Georgia, to become knowledgeable of the most recent travel protocols and restrictions,” Ridley said. “Regularly updated information can be found by visiting the websites of the CDC and U.S. Department of State.”
