Skipping ball across water at No. 16 'must see' Masters Tournament tradition

In the 1980s, a new tradition emerged at the 16th hole at Augusta National Golf Club that became a fan favorite. 

It is customary during practice days for golfers to skip their balls off the pond fronting the green of the par-3 16th hole. And fans now expect them to do so.

A good skipping shot can propel the ball across the pond to the green 170 yards away. 

Many believe the practice dates back to the mid-1980s when Lee Trevino did it.

“It’s a must see for newcomers,” patron Dan Bundy, of Lawrenceburg, Ky., said in 2015.
