Nov.3 in Masters History
2012: Guan Tianlang, of China, wins the Asia-Pacific Amateur to qualify to play in the 2013 Masters as a 13-year old, the tournament’s youngest competitor.
Guan shot 1-under-par 71 at Amata Spring Country Club near Bangkok to capture the tournament by one shot. Previously, the youngest competitor in Masters history was Matteo Manassero, of Italy, who was 16 in 2010.
"I'm really excited about it," Guan told reporters, and he would do surprisingly well. He made the cut at the 2013 Masters, shooting 73-75-77-75 (300) to finish 58th.
1964: It wasn’t a good day for private citizen Dwight Eisenhower who was vacationing at his cabin on the grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club. That morning the former president fell and hurt his back on a banister at his residence, requiring a trip to the Fort Gordon hospital. That night he watched presidential election returns that showed a Democrat landslide for Lyndon Johnson.
1986: The Augusta City Council votes to annex more than 1,000 acres of Washington Road property, including the Augusta National Golf Club. The action, however, requires approval from the U.S. Justice Department and the feds appear in no hurry. The issue will become moot in the mid-1990s when the city and county consolidate into one municipal government.
