Forecast for victory: Many Masters champions have had to overcome weather
Many a Masters champion has had to overcome the elements in addition to the golf course and the rest of the field to slip on the green jacket. In 2019, the threat of inclement weather had the final round start on Sunday morning -- a first in Masters history -- as Tiger Woods came from behind for his fifth victory.
1930s
Rain fell during every Masters in this decade. In 1936, the first round was delayed until Friday and the Sunday round was postponed forcing 36 holes to be played Monday. The 1938 Masters started Friday before play was suspended and 36 holes played Sunday with a Monday finish for the fourth round. In 1939, rain on Thursday forced 36 holes to be played Sunday.
1940s
In 1941, Craig Wood played the first nine of the second round in “a drenching rain” at par to hold onto his early lead and go one to be the first wire-to-wire winner.
1950s
With the field battered by heavy winds over the final two rounds, Sam Snead held on to win the 1952 Masters for his second green jacket.
1960s
Gary Player’s 1961 victory came with a Monday finish after rain postponed Sunday’s scheduled final round.
1970s
When 2.5 inches of rain fell, the third-round of the 1973 Masters was postponed before noon with only seven players on the course, leading to a two-tee start on Sunday and a Monday finish. Tommy Aaron overcame a four-shot deficit in the final round to capture the green jacket.
1980s
In 1983, a first-round weather delay was followed by a Friday washout. The second round began on Saturday with threesomes playing off both tees and was finished Sunday morning by six golfers. Seve Ballesteros took advantage of the gusty winds on the front-nine of Monday’s final round for his second Masters title.
1990s
The third-round of the 1992 Masters was delayed by nearly 3 hours by rain and lightning, causing six players to not finish their rounds. Fred Couples shot 4-under par on the 22 holes he played Sunday to win by 2 strokes.
2000s
Tiger Woods fourth green jacket was earned in 2005 amid three days plagued with adverse weather. Finishing his third round Sunday morning, Woods birdied his first four holes to get into the final pairing. He beat playing partner Chris DiMarco in a sudden death playoff.
2010s
In 2019, the threat of impending storms led to players going off No. 1 and No. 10 in threesomes at 7:30 a.m. as Tiger Woods rallied for his first come-from-behind win in a major.
