1988 Masters champion Sandy Lyle makes fashion statement in opening round
Sandy Lyle might not have made noise with his golf game Thursday, but his wardrobe spoke volumes. The 1988 Masters Champion strolled 18 holes with a pair of suspenders strapped over his shoulders.
“Well, it started a few months ago,” Lyle said. “I had my work trousers on and I had a lot of tools in my work trousers. You know what happens with the weight?”

Lyle went off No. 10 tee in the first grouping Thursday, and played his first nine holes in 40. His downfall occurred at hole 16, when his tee shot plugged into the bank. The 62-year-old took an unplayable lie and made double bogey.
“It was very nerve-wracking,” Lyle said of being the first group off. “Especially when you think you've topped it off the 10th tee. I thought I scuffed it up the left side where Rory McIlroy went some years ago.”
Lyle finished with 78 and is scheduled to tee off at 11:05 a.m. in the second round with Jimmy Walker and Yuxin Lin. When asked if his suspenders will remain a fixture, Lyle responded, “If I start shooting some scores they definitely will.”
