Phil Mickelson bemoans putting but still in Masters contention after a Friday 70
Phil Mickelson is where he’s used to being at Augusta National: in contention.
The three-time Masters winner posted a second-round 70 on Friday and will enter the weekend at 5-under par.
“I'm striking the ball exceptional, and I'm putting horrific,” Mickelson said. “If I get that fixed this weekend, I'm going to make a run.”
Mickelson combined for 60 putts over his first two rounds, which has offset a steady driving performance. Phil’s length left him with a wedge into Nos. 14 and 17, while hitting 5-iron into the par-5 second hole both rounds.
“I'm driving like a stallion,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson estimates he’s left, “eight, nine, ten shots on the greens.” At No. 3, Phil hit a 300-yard drive during his second round and was left with 41 yards to the pin on the par 4. Mickelson chipped to 18 feet and three-putted for bogey.
“It's pathetic,” Mickelson said. “I'm going to fix that and hopefully make a run.”
After following her husband, Amy Mickelson said of Phil, “He’s going to be putting all night.”
Mickelson’s opening round was halted by darkness on Thursday, and he resumed at 7:30 a.m. Friday with his tee shot on the 12th hole. Phil parred the iconic par 3, and played the final seven holes of his first round in 2 under.
“It doesn't matter if we're teeing off on 10, 12, rain delays, whatever,” Mickelson said. “We get a chance to compete for a green jacket.”
This marks the 10-year anniversary of Mickelson’s last victory at Augusta National, and the 2004, 2006 and 2010 champion is hoping for more weekend magic in 2020.
“I struck it well enough to keep me in it despite probably being last in the field in putting,” Mickelson said. “But I'm going to get that fixed. I’m going to get it fixed.”
