Dylan Frittelli goes distance to make top five at Masters

Dylan Frittelli is already envisioning the 2021 Masters Tournament. The South African tied for fifth this week in his second trip to Augusta National Golf Club and will return in April.

Frittelli missed the cut in 2019 in his only other appearance here.

“It would be nice to play that 18th hole with 20,000 crowded around,” said Frittelli, who ended at 11-under par.

On a day where eight players shot rounds in the 60s, Frittelli closed with an even-par 72. He birdied Nos. 7, 9 and 14, while mixing in bogeys at Nos. 5, 8 and 16.

The University of Texas graduate credits length as his most significant improvement from 2019 to 2020.

“I made a big investment in driving distance,” said Frittelli, who entered the week ranked No. 100 in the world. “I’m trying to hit it longer and straighter, and that pays off on a course like this. I was hitting the driver really well.”

This marked the first time Frittelli has finished top-10 in a major championship. In his previous nine majors, his best finish was a tie for 31st at the 2018 PGA Championship.

“Obviously it's a big step for me to finish top 10 in a major,” Frittelli said. “It's my first time. Also first time making the cut here, as well, so lots of first-time events that I'm proud of.”
