Patrick Reed fails to gain ground over weekend at 2020 Masters, ties for 10th

Patrick Reed cooled off over the weekend, but still managed to secure a top-10 finish in the 2020 Masters Tournament.

The 2018 Masters champ was 8 under after two rounds, but would shoot only 1-under par the rest of the way. He managed 24 birdies over 72 holes, but struggled with consistency as he added 13 bogeys and a double bogey.

"So even though I made, it felt like, a million birdies the first two days, and made a lot of mistakes as well, it was just one of those with how soft it was playing on the first two rounds, you're still able to kind of get away with long and short misses because the greens are softer, greens are more receptive, so you can hit the chip shot really close,“ he said.

Unfortunately for the former Augusta State Jaguar, he spent Saturday and Sunday treading water while others were creeping up the leaderboard.

“As it started getting a little firmer, as the greens got faster, you have to go back to missing the ball in the right spot and having to rely on quality chips and putts, and it just seems to be just a hair off,” he said. “When you're a hair off, especially here, I mean, a yard off here or there in the right spot can end up 10, 20 yards away from the hole. Unfortunately, I did that a couple too many times.”

A lot of the chatter this week centered on the lack of patrons providing the usual cheers and visual presence, but Reed said their absence made for distractions in which players generally aren’t accustomed.

’You don't hear other players usually on other holes and stuff like that because there's fans between us and the other holes, so it kind of bounces off,“ he said. ”Now you can hear everybody. So you're constantly kind of stopping, waiting on certain holes to allow other guys to hit from different holes, stuff like that. So it's just stuff you usually don't have to deal with.“
