Larry Mize walks off No. 6 with a bogey. "It was all downhill after those first three holes," the 1987 Masters winner said. "It's playing very hard today. In all my years here I don't ever remember having three days in a row like this."

Larry Mize dropped his putter, raised both arms in disbelief and received congratulations from playing partner Bill Haas.

After sinking a 62-foot birdie putt on No. 3, he deserved it.

“If you guaranteed me a two-putt, I would’ve picked it up,” Mize said. “I was trying to get the thing close and somehow it found the hole.”

Mize carded just two birdies in his opening two rounds but began Saturday with three in a row. He drained a 44-footer on No. 1 and a 13-footer on the par-5 second. Add the one on No. 3, and the 1987 Masters champion tallied a combined 119 feet in putts his first three holes.

“The putter was clicking early but I still wasn’t hitting the ball great,” Mize said. “Overall, my short game wasn’t very good after those first three holes.”

After starting hot, Mize quickly cooled with bogeys on his next four holes. The Augusta native shot 78 in windy conditions, with 40 on the second nine, and is 11-over heading into Sunday.

“It was all downhill after those first three holes,” Mize said. “It’s playing very hard today. In all my years here I don’t ever remember having three days in a row like this. Usually, we might have one windy day but never three straight.”

After having no three-putts Friday, Mize had two Saturday. Asked what part of the course is playing the most difficult, Mize said, “The first 18 holes. I mean, the first hole was dead into the wind, and it stayed really tough all day. Amen Corner is always the hardest with the wind but the entire course is unbelievably tough right now.”
