An adventurous back nine left Larry Mize looking toward the practice area after his first round Thursday.

Mize, the 1987 Masters Tournament champion and Augusta native, shot 4-over-par 76 to open his 33rd Masters.

Similar to last year, Mize found himself scrambling after the first day by carding five bogeys and one birdie, including four bogeys on the back nine. Ball-striking issues meant his day wasn’t done after the 18th hole.

“I didn’t hit it good,” Mize said. “I scrambled well to get a 76 out of it, because I hit it horrible. I’ll be working on the practice tee (Thursday) to try to find something a little better tomorrow.”

The positives centered on his wedge play and putting. He was left with a 54-yard approach on his third shot on No. 5, but he stopped it two feet from the hole and made par. An 85-yard approach to the par-5 13th was left six feet away, and he made it for his lone birdie.

“I hit some good wedges and I putted pretty well today, so that was good, because I think I only hit about seven greens,” he said. “It was a struggle, but you fight for everything and do the best you can.”
