Lawrie takes early club house lead in Masters first round

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie climbed onto the leaderboard quickly in the first round of the Masters Tournament. Though a bogey at 18 finished the round on a negative note, he still turned in a 3-under 69 and went into the clubhouse in second place.

Henrik Stenson led at 6-under through 12 holes.

Lawrie said his game felt better today than when he won the British Open in 1999.

“I’m a better player than I was 10 years ago, absolutely,” he said.

Lawrie said he was pleased with his performance on the front nine despite carding a 1-over 37 with a bogey on the par-5 eighth. His performance on the back nine par-5s improved dramatically, recording eagles at both the 13th and 15th.

The second eagle came on a chip in from 45 feet.

“The back nine, not many times you have two eagles in nine holes,” he said. “That was nice.”

Lawrie’s best performance at Augusta came in 2003 when he tied for 15th. He is competing in his sixth Masters.
