Lee Westwood closes strong
While most players were stumbling to the clubhouse, Lee Westwood saved his best for last on Saturday. The Englishman had four birdies in his final seven holes, capped by a 34-footer on No. 18. Westwood is 1-over, four strokes behind leader Jordan Spieth. His 71 was one of only five rounds under par Saturday.
“It was nice to finish with a birdie,” Westwood said. “Anywhere around even par today is a good score. The wind was really up, but I think it dropped slightly over the last three or four holes. Still, the greens are getting glassy out there.”
Westwood’s second-nine tear came with birdies on Nos. 12-14.
“The golf course is not getting any easier,” he said. “(Caddie) Billy (Foster) and I were talking coming up 18; we think it’s the three hardest days either of us have ever had at Augusta. So to have a chance going into Sunday is great.”
Through three rounds, Westwood has played the first nine in 6-over and the back nine in 5-under.
“I always think the front nine plays tougher when it’s hard conditions,” he said. “There aren’t that many birdie chances and there’s a lot of bogey chances. The back nine you can make a few birdies. You can be a bit more aggressive. I took advantage of those holes (Saturday).”
