Louis Oosthuizen pleased with 71 on windy day
As green numbers populated players’ rounds, anything in red – even a simple “1” – played that much bigger.
That’s how Louis Oosthuizen felt after his Saturday round, when he shot 1-under 71 and was the first golfer on the day to break par.
“It probably feels like 66,” said Oosthuizen, who is 4-over for the tournament. “It was a grind. There wasn’t one easy shot I had today.”
Oosthuizen, who finished second in the 2012 Masters Tournament when he lost to Bubba Watson in a playoff, shot a bogey-free 34 on the second nine Saturday. A pair of 5-foot birdies on Nos. 14 and 17 brought him into red for the third round.
The South African, who was paired with Patrick Reed for a 10:10 a.m. tee time, said his goal was to squeeze out at least level par considering the morning’s tough winds and gusts up to 30 mph.
After his round, Oosthuizen said 74 or 75 would have been a good score.
He said he thought most players would be marking every little putt to be safe – not even short putts were safe from Mother Nature.
“I think downwind is the ones that get you, because you try and get it up in the air and it sort of knuckles it down sometimes. Other times it flies forever and you’re going down wind into a firm green. It’s tough,” Oosthuizen said.
“I mean, there was one occasion where it’s a left-edge putt and you’re hitting it right edge because of the wind,” he said. “The worst putt is the 3-, 4-footers with a little cross wind.
“It’s nice being off the golf course now.”
