Putt gives Kayla Sam Girls 12-13 title
Kayla Sam stepped toward her winning putt on No. 18. Then she stopped.
Was she supposed to get it? She didn't know. But she did soon know the trophy was hers.
The Californian won the Girls 12-13 overall championship at Sunday's Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Needing to get within 6 inches for the title, Sam sank the putt.
Eight overall champions will be crowned Sunday. So far, Alexa Plano (Girls 10-11), Sam, Alyssa Montgomery (Girls 14-15), Stephen Robert Hernandez (Boys 7-9) and Christian Kim (Boys 10-11) won their age groups.
Before Sam set out for the day's action, she had to let her friends know she could no longer respond to their encouraging text messages.
"I have to go now, I can't bring my phone," Sam remembered with a smile.
