Romain Langasque becomes first French amateur to make Masters cut

Romain Langasque was introduced to golf at age 2, when his dad let him toss balls underhanded to get a feel for the greens at a club in his native France.

On Friday, Langasque got his round rolling with a sand wedge on No. 15 at Augusta National Golf Club, holing out for eagle with a shot from 62 yards that took two hops before diving into the cup.

The 20-year-old British Amateur champion shot 1-over par 73 to finish at 3-over par, becoming the first French amateur to make the cut at the Masters.

“That gave me two strokes I needed to make the cut,” he said. “It was amazing; that was a good shot to put in.”

Langasque bogeyed after hitting into the front right bunker at No. 16, and he nearly chipped in for birdie on the 17th, only to miss a short come-backer to make bogey.

He crushed his drive on No. 18 but sailed his approach to the back of the green, leaving a tricky downhill putt of 69 feet. Langasque didn’t waste much time over the putt, playing it to five feet beneath the cup, then holing out for par.

Mid-Amateur champion Sammy Schmitz improved by six strokes, shooting 75 on Friday as he missed the cut. But the Wisconsin resident said he will be around to see Sunday’s final round.

As for other amateurs, Derek Bard shot 77 to finish at 9-over-par, and China’s Cheng Jin, 18, shot 78 to finish at 13-over. Paul Chaplet of Costa Rica, the youngest golfer in the tournament at 16, shot 82 and finished at 21-over.
