Sergio Garcia baffled by 75
For a brief moment Friday, Sergio Garcia was alone in second place at 4-under par. That quickly changed at No. 9.
The Spaniard had three shots to the ninth green roll back into the fairway, leading to a double bogey. Garcia shot 75 on Friday and heads into the weekend at even par, four strokes behind leader Jordan Spieth.
“I played great, simple as that,” Garcia said. “I felt like I missed two shots all day and I shot 75. With these conditions, it’s difficult. That’s what this course can do to you.”
After a first-round 69, Garcia played his first eight holes Friday in 1-under par. He played the final 10 at 4-over.
“I felt like I played really well,” he said. “It doesn’t feel right that I shot 75. The conditions are right down my alley, so I’m disappointed to not score better.”
Garcia hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation Friday, while needing 32 putts. The 36-year-old closed with bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18.
Garcia has now made the cut in seven of his past eight Masters appearances.
