Day rallies to tie for fifth at Masters

A double bogey at No. 15 and a bogey on No. 18 on Saturday put a damper on Jason Day's chances of winning his first Masters, but the 31-year-old Australian fired 67 on Sunday, tied for the best round of the day and finished at 11-under par to tie for fifth place.

Day birdied all four par-5s and closed out his tournament in style, knocking his approach on No. 18 to six feet and finishing with a birdie.

"Golf is very strange," said Day, who has played in nine Masters, with his best finish a tie for second in 2011. "Even though yesterday I was disappointed and discouraged after the round knowing I let the lead slip away, today I had just one bogey on the card, and I played really solid coming in.

"From No. 11 to No. 14 I missed some crucial putts, just burnt the edge, and I wish they would have gone in because I think I would have really given this a good scare."

Day did a good job around the greens and ranked sixth in scrambling, getting up and down 15 out of 20 times this week. He also tied for 10th in greens in regulation, and tied for fifth in total putts with 112.

"I didn't really start taking notice of the leaderboard until the backside," said Day, who is ranked No. 14. "I thought if I could shoot 4-under on the backside, that may give it a sniff, and I shot 3-under in the end. But I just played very, very solid tee to green. I putted well and I'm very pleased with how things went."
