Nov. 5 in Masters history
1977: A bronze plaque is dedicated to Clifford Roberts, one of the co-founders at Augusta National. It is installed near the flagpole within the circular drive in front of the clubhouse – the Founders Circle.
In attendance that Saturday were Roberts’ widow, members of the club, Jerome Franklin -- the sole founding member remaining, and Bowman Milligan, club steward for more than 40 years and the club's longest serving employee.
The inscription read:
Clifford Roberts
March 6, 1894 to Sept. 29, 1977.
“Co-founder and chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament. “His contributions to the game of golf will be remembered as long as the game is played.
“Presented in honor of Clifford Roberts by members of the Augusta National Golf Club on this fifth day of November 1977.”
Roberts joined with Bobby Jones to found the Augusta National in 1931 and the Masters in 1934. He served as chairman of the tournament committee from the time of the first tournament until 1976.
1978: Bubba Watson comes into the world in Bagdad, Fla. He would win the first of his two Masters titles 34 years later with a remarkable curving 52 gap wedge on the No. 10 playoff hole to take the 2012 title, besting Louis Oosthuizen.
1958: Masters winner Arnold Palmer was back in Georgia and clearly the favorite when he teed off in the Atlanta Open being played at the Cherokee Town and Country Club.
The tournament had a rare Wednesday start, promoters said, so play could be suspended on Saturday to accommodate attendance at the Georgia Tech-Clemson football game.
The day of rest did not help Palmer, who played poorly in the tournament won by former U.S. Open champ Julius Boros.
