Nick Faldo says Masters players can't wait until Sunday to step up
Nick Faldo said the wisdom of words that the “Masters Tournament starts Sunday on the back nine” just isn’t true.
The three-time Masters winner, now the lead golf analyst for CBS, said players need to be ready to go when they tee it up Thursday.
“That saying is not true by a long way,” Faldo said. “Now in all the majors from Thursday first shot you have to be full on, full into it, and not fall asleep. That’s how I treated it. Every shot was important on Thursday and that got me right into it.
“So no, I think that’s a cliche phrase we just throw around.”
Faldo said because of the difficulty of Augusta National and the talent in the field, players can’t afford to wait to make a move.
“Because you have to do a lot just to be in contention to have a shot,” he said. “It’s not a shootout because the golf course is so difficult. It’s not a putting competition. You have to hit great shots.”
